The recently concluded DAVRAA Meet held in Mati City has stirred a lot of controversies after the tournament managers opted to choose players and even coaches who will play in the Palarong Pambansa 2008 in Palawan.

davao_sports_archery-3.JPGThe joy of having defeated an opponent in an event has caused dismay contrary to what was expected since there were players who won gold in their event but were not qualified to represent region XI in the coming Palaro.

“They have not met the standards,” was the explanation of one of the tournament managers.

One example is the Archery team wherein a player from Davao City was declared not qualified to go to the higher level even after winning three golds in the Archery women division. This athlete has trained for a year just to perfect her craft but was rejected to go to the Palaro. One could surely tell how the effort, confidence and pride of this young hopeful athlete were stripped off after she was informed that she has not met the standards they have set thus disqualifying her to join the Palaro.

Another unbelievable decision was when some players of the winning sepak takraw teamdurians_sepak_sports-10.JPG also from Davao City were replaced by another players from Mati City for the reason that these players have already joined the previous Palaro. The question is: If they were really good in their game then why were they smashed by the Durians? Is there no chance for a neophyte who have surpassed the “power” of his much more senior opponents? If the aim of DAVRAA is to choose the strongest athletes in the Region, then why choose the losers when there are already emerging young breed in the sports?

In the elementary volley ball team girls where Davao Oriental dominated the court but to the dismay of the coach who is one of the most important factors to the victory of these girls was that she was not chosen to coach the team but a coach from Davao City was chosen to replace her. Well, the reason was not really clearly stated by the officials.

One motivation of the athletes to work hard to be able to grab a gold in the lower meet is the pride of going to a higher meet which is the Palaro. A sports competition is not to be compared to a game show wherein your chances of winning depend on your luck. This is a competition of the agility and ability. And to win, an athlete must be well-prepared and well-trained.

Those winning athletes have proven that they have prepared well and have work hard and it just but right that they should be given what is due to them - that is, to go to the higher meet. And this goes true the same to the coaches.

If the reason by the officials of the DAVRAA was put certain standards so athletes could really do good in the higher meet, isn’t it too late for such decision? If this is what they want, they should have applied these rules in the lower meets.

If they think that they have made the right and best decision, then they are wrong. They have caused more confusion and damage.
